Meet the Artist Behind the Resurgence of Typewriters: Lucas Dul and Typewriter Chicago

Reviving Vintage Typewriters: Suburban Chicago Repair Business Restores Old to New

Downers Grove, Ill. (CBS) – Typewriters have been making a comeback, and one young man is at the forefront of this resurgence. Lucas Dul, a 24-year-old passionate about history and vintage machines, runs Typewriter Chicago, a business that restores and sells these old machines.

Dul has been tinkering with typewriters since he was 14 years old. His workshop inside his parents’ home in Downers Grove houses about 70 to 80 of these vintage machines, which he restores with artistry and intuition. To Dul, each repair job involves more than just fixing mechanical issues; it’s about preserving the machine’s unique charm while ensuring it functions like new.

Dul is not only an accomplished typewriter repairman but also an artist known for his doodling and photography. He loves capturing the beauty of these old machines through his lens and fills his phone with pictures of them, much like the real ones fill his parents’ house.

As Typewriter Chicago continues to grow in popularity, Dul plans to relocate and expand his operations. He recently signed a lease for a new space in Downers Grove where he hopes to open his shop early May. With an eye for artistry and a knack for restoring old into new, Dul is poised to make a significant mark in the world of typewriter repair and restoration.
