Witness the full ‘Flower Moon’ rise alongside a red supergiant star in May

The Flower Moon, also known as May’s full moon, will peak on Thursday, May 23. It will be visible on Wednesday and Friday, shining near the bright star Antares. This full moon is named the Flower Moon because of the abundance of flowers that bloom during this month in the Northern Hemisphere. Other names for May’s full moon include the Milk Moon, Mothers’ Moon, Bright Moon, Hare Moon, and Grass Moon. Indigenous people like the Anishinaabe or Ojibwe of the Great Lakes region refer to it as Nimebine Giizis, or Sucker Moon.

On Wednesday, May 22, the moon will rise just before the sun sets while on Thursday, May 23, it will rise about 50 minutes later in near darkness. To get the best views of the full moon, it is recommended to observe it twice on different days. Look for the moonrise and moonset times in your location and choose a spot with a clear view of the eastern horizon.
