Mars Rover Journey Continues: Exploring the Red Planet’s Trekkopje with APXS, MAHLI and ChemCam

Analyzing Trekkopje on Sol 1386, Inspecting the Wheels

As part of the Sol 1385 plan, our rover journey took us 66 meters, allowing us to continue southward between the “Baynes Mountains” and “Helgas Dune”. For Sol 1386, the plan includes APXS and MAHLI observations of the target “Trekkopje”, followed by a short science block. Mastcam will kick off the block with atmospheric measurements, while ChemCam will analyze Trekkopje in addition. Mastcam will also document these observations alongside the AEGIS observation from Sol 1385. Instead of driving, MAHLI will be used to inspect the wheels on this day’s agenda.

According to Ryan Anderson, a planetary scientist at the USGS Astrogeology Science Center and a member of the ChemCam team on MSL, these dates are subject to change due to various factors related to the Martian environment, communication relays, and rover status.
