Mark Cavendish is currently striving to break the record for the most stage wins in the Tour de France. On the first stage of the race, he faced difficulties and ended up finishing 39 minutes behind the main group. However, despite his poor start, he managed to finish with his team members, including fellow sprinter Fabio Jakobsen of DSM.

Meanwhile, French cyclist Romain Bardet of DSM-Firmenich-PostNL emerged as the winner of the stage from Florence to Rimini in Italy, with his teammate Frank van den Broek coming in second after a breakaway that saw the two riders narrowly staying ahead of the peloton.

Cavendish, riding for Astana-Qazaqstan, is aiming to surpass the existing record of 34 stage wins in the Tour de France, currently held by Eddy Merckx.
