Manchester United’s Stadium Naming Rights: To Sell or Not to Sell?

Manchester United ‘contemplating option of’ selling Old Trafford naming rights

Manchester United, under part-owner Jim Ratcliffe, is currently exploring the possibility of selling naming rights to their iconic Old Trafford stadium. The club has never before sold its stadium’s naming rights, but it is now considering this option as a way to increase revenues.

The club’s stadium plans include the potential sale of naming rights, following in the footsteps of other Premier League clubs that have done the same. Initial discussions have been held with financial institutions such as Bank of America as United considers funding options for their stadium project.

If Manchester United decides to refurbish the existing Old Trafford stadium, they may choose to have an associated partner for the stadium rather than a complete sale of naming rights. This option is similar to Wembley Stadium, which has a full title of Wembley Stadium, connected by EE. This partnership sees the network provider pay up to £10m per year for naming rights.

Alternatively, Manchester United could also consider selling full naming rights if they decide to build a completely new stadium. The direction the club chooses will likely depend on its future stadium developments.
