Is Facial Recognition Technology at Mall of America Accurate?

Mall of America has implemented facial recognition software to enhance its security measures. Visitors are required to give their consent by having their faces scanned by security cameras upon entering the mall. According to the mall, they do not keep records or information on individuals who are not considered persons of interest. Officials at the mall emphasize that they are scanning faces solely for identification purposes and have a database that conducts three layers of human verification before taking any action.

The decision to use facial recognition technology was made to improve the mall’s ability to detect individuals of interest, such as those who may be trespassing, posing a threat to the environment, identified by law enforcement, or missing or in danger. The chances of being wrongly identified are 1 in a million, according to analysts. With an average of 40 million visitors annually, there may be around 40 false identifications per year.

Facial recognition technology at Mall of America has been successful in identifying individuals of interest. For every 1,000 individuals scanned, the technology missed identifying 4.7 people.
