Malian Footballer Faces Strongest Sanctions for Defying Homophobia Awareness Campaign

Camara sanctioned for obscuring anti-homophobia symbols

France’s sports minister, Amelie Oudea-Castera, expressed that Mali international, Mohamed Camara, should face “the strongest sanctions” for his actions. The 24-year-old player had placed white tape over the campaign logo on his chest during a game against Nantes in Ligue 1 on 19 May.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) made the decision to impose a ban after Camara refused “to carry out one or more actions to raise awareness of the fight against homophobia.” The initiative was organized by the LFP to raise awareness and promote inclusivity in French football. All Ligue 1 clubs had worn the campaign logo on their kits on the final day of the season, with the rainbow emblem also displayed on team shirts.

The Malian Football Federation publicly supported Camara, stating that players are citizens whose fundamental rights should be protected. Monaco’s chief executive, Thiago Scuro, reiterated the club’s support for the LFP’s campaign and mentioned that they will discuss the situation with Camara internally. The club aims to address the issue and uphold the values of inclusivity and diversity in football.
