Major League Baseball Umpire Pat Hoberg Appeals Investigation over Gambling Violation

MLB umpire Pat Hoberg challenges disciplinary action amid sports betting probe

Major League Baseball is currently conducting an investigation into umpire Pat Hoberg for a potential violation of sports gambling policies. The commissioner’s office announced on Friday that Hoberg has chosen to appeal the penalty that was handed down as a result of the investigation. Although the specific details of the violation and the extent of the punishment have not been disclosed, MLB has determined that discipline was still necessary.

Hoberg, a 37-year-old umpire, began his career in 2014 and became a full-time staff member in 2017. Throughout his time with MLB, he has officiated some of the most prestigious games in baseball, including Game 2 of the 2022 World Series and various Wild Card and Division Series games. He also worked the plate during the historic “Field of Dreams Game” in 2021 and officiated during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Before making it to the major leagues, Hoberg gained experience umpiring in minor leagues such as the Pacific Coast League, the Texas League, and the Florida State League. His roots in Iowa, where he grew up, played a significant role in his career leading up to his work as a MLB umpire. Despite this setback, Hoberg remains committed to continuing his work as an umpire and hopes to clear his name through the appeal process.
