Maddux Springer Graduates High School with $10,000 and Scientific Accolades for Green Sea Turtle Research

This Saturday, Maddux Springer, a senior at ‘Iolani School, will graduate with $10,000 in his pocket. The award came after his research on the connection between high wastewater levels and fatal tumors in green sea turtles in Kāne’ohe Bay. Springer’s study focused on the pathway from wastewater to algae, invasive algae, higher levels of arginine in their tissues, and consumption of these higher levels by green sea turtles.

Springer’s work was recognized at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles where he received the Peggy Scripps Award for Science Communication and first place in the animal science category. He believes that his work will bring much-needed attention to the challenges faced by green sea turtles and will help reduce their mortality rates and ensure their survival for future generations.

Springer plans to share his findings with Governor Josh Green and further his education at the University of Oregon. His interview was featured on The Conversation on May 29, 2024, airing weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.
