Lychee Shortage in Bac Giang Province: Trading Challenges and Soaring Prices

Lychee prices soared at the close of the season

In Bac Giang province, this year’s lychee output is estimated to be 100,000 tons. Despite the low lychee output at the end of the season, authorities in Luc Ngan District have reported a shortage of supply at weighing points and processing kilns. This has led to traders going directly to gardens to purchase lychees, as prices continue to climb every day.

The high demand for lychees has also resulted in traders paying top prices for the remaining stock, with some fruits fetching up to 200,000 VND per kilogram. The decline in lychee supplies from the North to the South is due to crop failures in China and a surge in fabric prices caused by high demand and shortages. Retail prices for lychees have also risen significantly, with prices at high-end stores reaching up to 320,000 VND per kilogram for air-transported lychees.

Major retail chains like MM Mega Market and Central Retail are facing challenges in procuring enough lychees to meet consumer demand. Despite the high prices, the scarcity of lychees is impacting sales in supermarkets and stores, with some limiting quantities due to the limited supply. Ms. Hoang Anh, a fabric trader, mentioned that fabric prices have surged due to high demand and shortages caused by crop failures in China. This has resulted in a decline in lychee supplies from the North to the South.
