Lummus Technology, a renowned provider of process technologies and sustainable energy solutions, has recently secured a significant contract with IndianOil Corp. Ltd. (IOCL) for the deployment of their Lummus/Versalis cumene technology in Paradip, India. This new cumene unit is part of IOCL’s ongoing petrochemical and polymers expansion at their complex in Paradip.
This project strengthens the long-standing relationship between Lummus and IOCL, as this is the second recent cumene license in India for Lummus. The award reflects the confidence that IOCL has in Lummus’ cutting-edge cumene technology, which promises to deliver lower energy costs, increased reliability, operational efficiency, and exceptional product yield for IOCL. This will enable IndianOil to optimize its plant economics and support its growth initiatives.
Lummus’ scope for this project includes licensing the cumene technology, providing basic design engineering services, supplying proprietary catalysts, offering site services, advisory services, and training to IOCL. In addition to this project, IOCL has licensed multiple Lummus technologies in the past, including naphtha cracker, INDMAX FCC, and polypropylene technologies at complexes across India.
Lummus and Versalis have been collaborating on cumene technologies since 2007. The cumene process is a liquid-phase alkylation technology that utilizes a proprietary zeolite catalyst and is known for its high cumene yield, ultra-high purity cumene product, and long catalyst run length. By deploying this technology at their complex in Paradip, IOCL can further enhance its position as a leading player in the Indian petrochemicals industry while contributing towards sustainable development goals by reducing carbon emissions from petrochemical processes.
