Lufthansa Announces Higher Flight Ticket Prices Due to New European Regulation on Sustainable Fuel Use

Lufthansa, a German airline, has announced that tickets for flights after December 31, 2024 will increase in price. This is due to a new European regulation that requires airlines to use more environmentally friendly fuel. The price increase will vary depending on the length of the flight, with short and medium flights seeing an increase of 5-7 euros per ticket and long-haul flights increasing by 18-72 euros per ticket.

Lufthansa and its affiliated airlines – Eurowings, Swiss Air, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines – must comply with this regulation. Starting from 2025, airlines are mandated to use 2% of environmentally friendly fuel SAF which is five times more expensive than traditional jet fuel. The ultimate goal is to increase the use of SAF to 70% by 2050 in order to reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint.

The shift towards more sustainable fuel options is a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of air travel.
