AMLO Urges Urgent Judiciary Reform in Mexico, Calling it “Hijacked”

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, emphasized the urgency of his controversial reform of the Judiciary on Tuesday. He stated that there is already enough information available about the reform, highlighting the corruption within the Power of Attorney and the Judiciary. López Obrador is pushing for the approval of the reform before the next president, Claudia Sheinbaum, takes office on October 1.

Despite López Obrador’s eagerness to expedite the approval process, Sheinbaum has promised a comprehensive discussion involving various stakeholders such as law schools, workers in the Judiciary, and current judges. The reform would allow judges, electoral magistrates, and the Supreme Court to be elected by popular vote. López Obrador aims to secure a two-thirds majority in Congress by September 1 to modify the Constitution.
