Longtime Sports Anchor Jim Donovan Announces Retirement After Illustrious Career with WKYC and Cleveland Browns

Jim Donovan, WKYC sports anchor, stepping down from 3News.

After a successful career in television news, longtime WKYC sports anchor Jim Donovan has announced his retirement. On June 10, he will have his final broadcast on the local NBC affiliate. Donovan expressed gratitude for the support he has received from viewers, Browns fans, colleagues and everyone who has been part of his journey. He is excited to spend more time with his family after retiring.

Donovan began his career as a weekend sports anchor at 3News in 1985. In 1999, he became the radio voice of the Cleveland Browns when the team returned after a three-year hiatus. Despite facing health challenges such as leukemia diagnosis in 2000 and a relapse in 2023, Donovan persevered and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2011. He returned to WKYC and Browns radio broadcasts in November of that year and completed his last radiation treatment in February 2024.

In addition to reporting on sports for the station’s 6 p.m., 11 p.m., and Front Row shows since 2012, Donovan has also received multiple regional Emmy awards and is a Hall of Fame member of the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters and The Press Club of Cleveland.

WKYC President & GM Micki Byrnes praised Donovan’s illustrious career and acknowledged his numerous accomplishments in the field. While Donovan requested a quiet exit, the station plans to honor him with accolades on his last day. Viewers can send their well wishes to goodluckjimmy@wkyc
