Local Nurse Defies Odds and Becomes World Powerlifting Champion

Intensive care nurse secures world powerlifting championship

Siobhan Taylor, a nurse from Haverhill, Suffolk, recently made history as the world champion in powerlifting with a record-breaking bench press. Taylor, who started powerlifting six years ago to overcome a back injury, represented Great Britain in the 84kg Masters 1 category in Austin, Texas. Her 185kg bench press not only won her the title but also set a new British and Commonwealth record.

Taylor’s journey to becoming a powerlifting champion began when she was recommended the sport by her colleagues at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. She was looking for an activity that would aid in her recovery from her back injury and found that powerlifting helped her build strength and confidence.

Taylor has already accumulated numerous titles in the sport including Commonwealth and All England Champion for powerlifting, as well as British and European Champion on the equipped bench. She was ecstatic about her win and expressed gratitude towards her colleagues who gathered to watch a live stream of the competition at the hospital.

Despite her big win, Taylor kept celebrations simple with just a cup of tea. She is now looking forward to defending her title at the upcoming European Championships. With her newfound fame and success, Taylor hopes to inspire others to pursue their passions and overcome obstacles through sports like powerlifting.
