Liverpool has rejected a proposal from Newcastle United that could have involved swapping Anthony Gordon and Jarell Quansah in a potential swap deal. The 23-year-old forward, who joined Newcastle for £45m in January 2023, is highly admired by Liverpool. However, the Anfield club did not feel that the proposed deal was in their best interests.
Gordon, who recently made a substitute appearance for England in their Euro 2024 match against Slovenia, scored 11 goals for Newcastle last season and was named the club’s player of the season for 2023-24. Despite interest from Paris St-Germain, Liverpool did not make any offer for Gordon and did not want to part ways with 21-year-old centre-back Quansah.
Quansah, who established himself as a regular in Liverpool’s first team last season, narrowly missed out on making England’s final squad for Euro 2024. With a number of strong options in their forward positions, such as Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota, Liverpool did not see the need to pursue a deal involving Gordon.
Newcastle United has not yet responded to requests for comment from BBC Sport regarding the proposed swap deal.
