Lexi Thompson Announces Retirement at U.S. Women’s Open, Leaving Lasting Impact on Golf

29-year-old Lexi Thompson reveals plans to retire following 2024 season.

Lexi Thompson made history at the young age of 12 when she became the youngest competitor in the U.S. Women’s Open in 2007, and it seems fitting that she would make a significant life announcement during this tournament.

Leading up to the 79th U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club, Thompson announced her retirement on the USGA’s website. At just 29 years old, she plans to finish out the remainder of the 2024 season, having had an illustrious career with 11 wins on the LPGA tour, including her first major win at the 2014 Chevron Championship. She made history by winning her first LPGA title at the age of 16, a record later broken by Lydia Ko at 15.

Despite facing challenges and heartbreak throughout her career, such as a scoring error that cost her victory in the 2017 ANA Inspiration tournament, Thompson has remained a fan favorite and has represented the U.S. on six Solheim Cup teams.

Thompson is scheduled to address the media on Tuesday to discuss her retirement decision further and will leave a lasting impact on the world of golf. Her contributions will be remembered by fans and fellow players alike as she continues to inspire future generations of golfers with her skill and determination on and off the course.
