Legendary NFL Running Back Barry Sanders Shares Health Scare on Father’s Day Weekend and Encourages Vigilance

Barry Sanders, Lions legend, opens up about health scare involving heart during Father’s Day weekend

The Detroit Lions legend, Barry Sanders, had a terrifying Father’s Day weekend after experiencing a health scare related to his heart. At 55 years old, the former NFL running back did not disclose the exact issue he faced but emphasized the importance of staying vigilant about one’s health even when feeling fine.

Following the scare, Sanders shared that his doctors advised him to prioritize his health and well-being. He acknowledged the need to take this opportunity to focus on his overall health. In response, the Lions sent an online “Get well soon” card for Sanders as a gesture of support.

Despite being more than 25 years removed from his playing career, Sanders remains an NFL icon and one of the greatest running backs of all time. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Despite retiring abruptly and spending years estranged from the Lions over bonus money, Sanders has since reconciled with the team and now serves as a paid ambassador. He was last seen in public in April at the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit.
