Lee Jong-ho Inspections Heavy Ion Accelerator Trial Operation at IBS and Seeks Input from Experts

Minister of Science Tours Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility in Daejeon

During his visit to the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in Yuseong District, western Daejeon on Monday, Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho inspected the trial operation of the heavy ion accelerator. The minister gathered opinions on its construction, operation, and utilization from experts at the institute.

The Heavy Ion Accelerator Research Institute at IBS is capable of accelerating both hydrogen ions (protons) and heavier ions to nearly the speed of light for collision with target materials. This technology is important for various scientific research projects and experiments.

The performance checks for the heavy ion accelerator are currently ongoing through trial operations that are scheduled to last from the end of June to August. These tests will help ensure that the accelerator is functioning properly and will provide valuable information for its future construction, operation, and utilization.

Minister Lee Jong-ho’s visit to the Heavy Ion Accelerator Research Institute at IBS was aimed at gaining insights into the facility’s capabilities and potential for scientific advancement. The minister was impressed with the institute’s technological advancements in this field and expressed his support for its continued growth and development.
