Laurel River Wins $12 Million Dubai World Cup by Breaking Distance Record and Surprising Trainer

Laurel River Dominates Dubai World Cup, Sets Record with 8 1/2 Length Victory and $12 Million Win

In a stunning turn of events, Laurel River emerged victorious in the $12 million Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse. With jockey Tadhg O’Shea guiding him, Laurel River took the lead halfway through the 1 1/4-mile race after starting from the far outside post in a field of 12 competitors. This win set a new record with an 8 1/2 length victory, breaking the previous record set by Dubai Millennium in 2000 at Nad al Sheba. Clocking in at 2:21.31, Laurel River paid $20.70 for the victory.

Trainer Bhupat Seemar expressed his astonishment at the result, stating, “I’m still coming to terms with what’s happened. I think it’ll probably sink in in another day or two. It’s absolutely amazing.” Previously under the training of Bob Baffert, Laurel River was transferred to Seemar’s care in Dubai by owner Juddmonte Farms last summer.

Defending champion Ushba Tesoro finished in second place and took home $2.4 million. Senor Buscador from the U.S., winner of the Saudi Cup, claimed third place and earned $1.2 million. Other notable finishes included Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Derma Sotogake in sixth place and Defunded in seventh place. Newgate, trained by Baffert, came in ninth place
