LaLiga’s Refusal to Implement Goalline Technology: A Dangerous Omission in the Eyes of Many

Is goalline technology used in LaLiga and other major leagues?

The absence of goalline technology in LaLiga is due to the high cost of implementation, as decided by Javier Tebas prior to the 2023/24 season. This leaves LaLiga as the only major European league without such technology, which some find absurd. Goalline technology is already utilized in several other European leagues, including the Bundesliga, Premier League, Serie A, Ligue 1, Dutch Eredivisie, and English Championship. It is also part of the ‘Big Five’ European leagues.

LaLiga’s decision not to implement goalline technology has led to confusion and controversy in many matches, including the recent El Clásico between Barcelona and Real Madrid. During this match, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal took a shot towards Real Madrid’s goal, and Lunin did his best to prevent it from going in. However, despite doubts raised by many observers on the field and off it, the referee waved off the goal.

Paul, who was covering the match live for El Nacional newspaper couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed. He immediately questioned why there wasn’t goalline technology in place to provide a clear answer. It was Ilkay Gündoğan who was one of the first to question the referee’s decision with others soon joining in. The relief was palpable among Madrid players and fans when they realized that their team had scored a legitimate goal after all.

So how does goalline technology work in soccer? The system involves several cameras positioned around the goal that help determine whether the ball has crossed the line. If it crosses over it an electronic device alerts the referee to a goal ensuring a more accurate and fair outcome.
