Laila Edwards Makes History as First Black Player to Score for Senior Women’s National Team at IIHF World Championship

In a historic moment, Laila Edwards made history as the first Black player to score for the senior women’s national team at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Utica. This accomplishment comes after Edwards made headlines as the first Black skater to play for Team USA in the Rivalry Series last fall. The 20-year-old’s standout performance included a hat trick in the semi-final game, leading her team to the gold medal match.

Despite her success on the ice, Edwards is focused on leaving a lasting impact beyond her athletic achievements. In an interview with Sabres beat reporter Rachel Hopmayer, the talented athlete shared insights into her journey and aspirations. Edwards is determined to be remembered not just for her scoring abilities, but for her contributions to the sport and her community.

As she prepares for the gold medal game, Edwards remains humble and dedicated to representing her team and her country with pride. Her trailblazing success as a Black player in hockey serves as inspiration for aspiring athletes and fans alike. Laila Edwards continues to break barriers and make history in the world of women’s hockey, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
