Kenya’s Avocado Export Boom: From Fifth to Number One in the World

How avocados are fueling a new sustainable economy in Kenya

Kenya has surpassed South Africa as the biggest African exporter of avocado pear, becoming a recent success story in the country’s export industry. The country has been steadily increasing its sales to Europe and is now aiming to enter markets in India and China. According to Kenya’s minister for cooperatives, Simon Chelugui, the country currently ranks number five in the world for avocado exports and has the potential to become number one.

Recent estimates from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) show that Kenya experienced a 24% increase in avocado exports last year, placing them third in the world for avocado exports. Although still behind Mexico and Peru, this growth demonstrates Kenya’s potential to continue climbing the ranks in the global avocado export market.
