Kenyan Runner Breaks World Record in 10,000 Meters at Prefontaine Classic Meet

Beatrice Chebet of Kenya Smashes World Record in 10,000 Meters

At the Prefontaine Classic meet in Eugene, Oregon, 24-year-old Beatrice Chebet of Kenya broke the world record in the 10,000 meters. She finished the race in an impressive 28 minutes and 54.14 seconds, surpassing the previous record set by Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia. Gidey had set the record at FBK Stadium in the Netherlands on June 8, 2021.

Chebet’s incredible performance earned her first place ahead of Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia, who finished in 29 minutes and 5.92 seconds. The race took place under cloudy and cool conditions at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The Prefontaine Classic is part of the international Diamond League series and is the only American stop on the circuit. The event attracts top athletes from around the world to compete in various track and field events. Beatrice Chebet has already established herself as a formidable force in long-distance running, winning the silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the world championships held at Hayward Field in 2022, and the bronze medal in the same event at the previous year’s championships in Budapest.
