Kenyan Runner Beatrice Chebet Smashes Women’s 10,000m World Record at Prefontaine Classic

A Kenyan runner, Beatrice Chebet, made history by breaking the women’s 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Clocking in at 28 minutes and 54.15 seconds at Hayward Field, Chebet achieved this feat in her first 10,000m race since March 2020. She surpassed the previous world record of 29:01.03 set by Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey in 2021, becoming the first woman to break the 29-minute mark in the event.

The previous year’s Pre Classic saw Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay breaking the 5000m world record while Chebet secured the third-fastest time in history in the same race. Chebet has previously won silver and bronze medals at world championships in the 5000m event and is expected to make her Olympic debut in Paris this summer. The majority of the events at the Pre Classic are scheduled for later in the day and can be viewed live on NBC, NBCSports.com,
