Beatrice Chebet of Kenya Smashes World Record in 10,000 Meters

Beatrice Chebet, a Kenyan athlete, broke the world record in the 10,000 meters at the Prefontaine Classic meet. She finished the race in 28 minutes and 54.14 seconds, beating the previous record set by Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey. Chebet expressed her gratitude to her management, coach, and supporters for their help in achieving this milestone. She felt her body was responding well during the race.

Chebet had not run the 10,000 meters since 2020 but decided to compete in the event at the Prefontaine Classic. With three laps to go, she started to pull away from her competitors and pushed herself in the final lap. Despite cloudy and cool weather conditions, she crossed the finish line ahead of Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia and Lilian Kasait Rengeruk of Kenya.

Her victory secured her a spot to compete in the 10,000 meters at the Paris Olympics. Chebet mentioned that her goal is to run in both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter events at the Olympics. She emphasized that her focus is on the 5,000 meters first before transitioning to the longer distance.

Beatrice Chebet’s world-record run also earned her a place in the Paris Olympics. The 24-year-old athlete had previously won a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the world championships held at Hayward Field. She had also claimed the bronze in the same event at
