The U.S. Olympic Trials kicked off in Indianapolis on Saturday night with a big win from Katie Ledecky and a new world record set by Gretchen Walsh. The athletes were vying for a chance to be selected for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

Katie Ledecky secured her fourth selection for the U.S. Olympic team, while two newcomers also made a mark during the event. In the women’s 400m freestyle, Ledecky dominated the race with a time of 3:58.35, finishing well ahead of her competitors. She was the only swimmer to break the four-minute mark, securing her spot on the Olympic team.

Ledecky was congratulated with a hug from Paige Madden, who finished second in the race. Reflecting on her performance, Ledecky expressed her excitement at the start of the trials, especially with Walsh breaking a world record and a young swimmer from Indiana making his Olympic debut. Despite her success in the 400m freestyle, Ledecky still has upcoming events, including the 1500m freestyle and the 800m freestyle.

Madden also had a standout performance, beating her personal best from the Tokyo Olympics and is now set to be nominated for her second Olympic team.
