Kansas City Royals and Chiefs Faced Uncertainty after Stadium Sales Tax Plan Defeat

Royals owner’s wife issue warning about possible relocation to Kansas following rejected ballpark funding proposal

The Kansas City Royals baseball team and the Kansas City Chiefs football team faced uncertainty following the defeat of a stadium sales tax plan by voters in Jackson County, Missouri. For two years, the teams had been working behind the scenes to get approval for a new downtown ballpark for the Royals and renovations to Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs.

Marny Sherman, wife of Royals owner John Sherman, ignited rumors that the team could potentially move to Kansas if no agreement was reached with Jackson County. She expressed disappointment in the lack of leadership that resulted in the defeat of the sales tax referendum, questioning why the teams would stay in a city that did not support them after their successes.

Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca shared a similar sentiment, expressing concern about the future of the teams in Missouri following the failed vote. He mentioned that there were no clear solutions moving forward and the teams may have to consider other options.

While Sherman’s comments were not made in an official capacity for the Royals, a team spokesperson stated that they are exploring all possibilities before making any decisions. The leases for the Royals and Chiefs are set to expire in 2031, adding urgency to the situation. Fans wait anxiously to see what the future holds for their beloved teams.
