KakaoTalk Faces Directive to Improve Service Reliability After Series of Outages

In the wake of recent disruptions to its service, KakaoTalk has been instructed by the Science Ministry to make changes to its operation system in order to improve reliability. The ministry has given Kakao one month to present a plan for enhancing its network operation system, and three months to show results.

Kakao has been advised to take several steps in order to prevent future disruptions. These include conducting pretests before major operations on its network, updating its communication disaster manual, upgrading its monitoring system, and analyzing the causes of any disruptions. The directive comes after KakaoTalk experienced three service outages in a single month.

On May 13, around 80% of KakaoTalk users faced difficulties sending messages for about six minutes due to an error with the data center server. Another outage occurred on May 20 during an internal system update, lasting six minutes. The most significant disruption happened on May 21, lasting 54 minutes as the company made an update to a server without addressing previous errors.

Science Minister Lee Jong-ho emphasized the importance of stable digital services and urged Kakao to fulfill its responsibility of providing a reliable service to its users. Kakao has committed to enhancing its internal operation management system in order to provide better service moving forward.
