Judge Nawaf Salam’s Quest for Objectivity in Decision-Making at the International Court of Justice

Nawaf Salam, President of the Hague Tribunal, Tweeted Against Israel in the Past

As the president of the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Nawaf Salam has been raising questions about his objectivity when it comes to decisions regarding Israel. This is due to a series of tweets he posted on his personal account while he was Lebanon’s ambassador to the United Nations in 2015. These tweets show Salam expressing strong criticism of Israel’s policies in the territories.

In one tweet, Salam marked the “occupation” of Judea and Samaria with a picture captioned “Unhappy birthday” on its 48th anniversary. Another tweet showed him participating in an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Israel, where he called for an end to the occupation and violence. Despite his harsh words against Israel, Salam insists that his criticism is not directed towards the Jewish population of the country.

Salam’s tweets also address the issue of portraying critics of Israel as anti-Semites. He believes that this is an attempt to intimidate and discredit those who speak out against Israel’s policies, an approach that he firmly rejects. Salam maintains that criticizing Israel should not be equated with being anti-Semitic, and that it is important to distinguish between the two.
