Man in Fresno County facing accusations of killing mother was prescribed mental health medication at the time of the incident

In Fresno County, Jose Juan Mata appeared in court nearly four years after the death of his mother, Maria Elias. Mata is facing a murder charge in connection to her death. During the court proceedings, Mata’s defense attorney focused on his whereabouts in May 2020, questioning a retired detective about how far Mata had traveled from the town.

The retired detective testified that Mata had only gone about 20 miles from the town. The prosecution presented their case to the judge for the second day, aiming to demonstrate there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial. Mata has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and previously claimed insanity. He has also disclosed that he was taking medication for anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder at the time of the crime.

The detective mentioned that Mata rambled during his interview with authorities following the incident. Mata’s older brother reportedly told investigators that he had never seen Jose become violent towards their mother. This exchange was part of a heated back-and-forth during cross-examination.

On Monday, we heard graphic details about how Elias died – she still had a blade in her chest and a power cord around her neck – as additional witnesses are expected to be called before Judge decides whether there is enough evidence for Mata to stand trial.
