Joining the 76ers: Eric Gordon signs one-year minimum-salary deal

The Philadelphia 76ers have announced the signing of veteran shooting guard Eric Gordon to a one-year, minimum-salary deal. This news was first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic, with Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports being the first to break the story that Gordon would be joining the Sixers on a minimum contract.

Gordon, who is 35 years old, has spent most of his career playing for teams led by current Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey. During Morey’s tenure as GM with the Houston Rockets, Gordon was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year for the 2016-17 season and averaged 15.7 points over 379 games with Houston. He is known for his three-point shooting and ability to handle the ball, and he posted solid numbers last season with the Suns, averaging 11.0 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game while shooting 37.8 percent from long range on 5.8 attempts per contest.

Gordon declined his player option with the Suns in order to enter free agency and ultimately signed with the Sixers. The team is still in the process of filling out their roster, but Morey is focused on building a contender and is looking to surround star center Joel Embiid with shooters. In addition to Gordon, the Sixers have also agreed to terms with Andre Drummond during free agency, solidifying their frontcourt depth.
