Joe Biden Announces Historic Gaza Strip Ceasefire Agreement: Will it Bring an End to the Conflict?

Biden announces Israel’s new ceasefire proposal to Hamas

On Friday, US President Joe Biden announced a proposed agreement for a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip conflict. The agreement, presented by Israel to Hamas, includes the release of all hostages held by the Palestinian Islamic group as a condition.

According to Biden, the agreement would consist of three phases. In the first phase, there would be a six-week ceasefire, Israeli troops would withdraw from populated areas in Gaza, and numerous hostages would be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Following this, negotiations for a permanent cessation of hostilities would take place, along with further hostage releases and Israeli troop withdrawals. The final phase would focus on reconstruction efforts and the return of hostage remains.

The US government and regional allies aim to ensure both Israel and Hamas uphold their commitments in this agreement. Israel believes that this proposal will help achieve its military objectives, including eliminating Hamas’ governing capacity in Gaza. Netanyahu’s government aims to secure the return of all hostages and weaken Hamas’s military capabilities.

Hamas has responded positively to the truce proposal, stating its willingness to work constructively towards a resolution. The group maintains demands for a full Israeli withdrawal, return of displaced Palestinians, and Gaza’s reconstruction. The hope is that this agreement will lead to a lasting ceasefire and the rebuilding of Gaza with international support.
