Jet Lag Impedes Joe Biden’s Presidential Debate Performance, but Polls Remain Unaffected

Biden attributes lackluster debate performance to jet lag

US President Joe Biden has admitted that his appearance at the recent Presidential debate against his challenger Donald Trump was not optimal. The 81-year-old attributed his poor performance to jet lag after two trips abroad in early June. He stated, “I didn’t have my best night,” at a campaign rally in McLean, Virginia. Biden had traveled around the world several times before the debate, crossing 100 time zones, which led to exhaustion and nearly falling asleep on stage. Although he did not mention any illness during a fundraising gala, representatives of the US presidential office attributed his weak performance during the debate to a cold.

In the month leading up to the debate, Biden had traveled twice within two weeks to France and Italy, attending the G7 summit in Bari, Italy, a fundraising event with Former President Barack Obama in Los Angeles, and spending time at Camp David to prepare for the debate. Despite facing criticism and calls to withdraw his candidacy, Biden performed better than any other prominent Democratic candidate in a hypothetical comparison with Trump. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that Biden and Trump are tied in the race for the presidential election on November 5, with both candidates receiving the support of 40 percent of registered voters each.

The controversy surrounding Biden’s performance in the debate has not caused him to lose ground in the polls. Despite ongoing debates about his poor performance on stage, Biden has maintained his support among voters.
