Japan, Ukraine Sign 10-Year Security Treaty Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia

Ukrainian President Zelensky announced at the G7 summit in Italy that Ukraine has signed a 10-year security treaty with Japan. According to Zelensky, this agreement is a significant document for one of the most economically and technologically advanced nations in the world. He stated that Japan will provide 4.5 billion USD to Ukraine in 2024 and continue to support the country throughout the duration of the agreement.

However, Tokyo has not yet commented on the information about the security treaty. Nonetheless, it is reported that Japan has already provided approximately 8 billion USD in humanitarian and financial aid to Ukraine since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in February 2022. This financial support is in addition to the security agreement signed with Japan, and Ukraine has also signed similar agreements with 14 other countries including Latvia, Finland, Canada, Italy, Britain, Germany, France, and Denmark.

These bilateral agreements are aimed at helping Ukraine ensure its security and prevent any new aggressive actions by Russia. They also serve to pave the way for Ukraine’s potential future membership in the EU and NATO. President Zelensky plans to meet with US President Joe Biden during the G7 summit and sign a 10-year security agreement with the United States as well, referring to it as unprecedented.
