Shericka Jackson, the reigning world champion from Jamaica, dominated the 200m race at a Diamond League meet in Marrakech. Despite facing a one meter/second headwind, Jackson finished in an impressive 22.82 seconds. Although her main rivals Gabby Thomas and Sha’Carri Richardson were absent from the competition, Jackson’s performance was still noteworthy.
The top female sprinters this year include Americans McKenzie Long and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, both of whom have run under 22.10 seconds. However, McLaughlin-Levrone will not be competing in the 200m at the Olympic Trials due to injury concerns. Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are expected to compete in the 200m at the Olympic Trials a few days after the US trials.
At the same meet in Marrakech, American Chase Jackson won the shot put with a throw of 20 meters. In the men’s events, world silver medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya won the 800m, while Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania set a new world record in discus with a throw of 73 meters and 6 centimeters.
As we look forward to future Diamond League meets, fans can expect to see some exciting competitions featuring reigning Olympic and world champions such as Sha’Carri Richardson, Grant Holloway, Athing Mu, Ryan Crouser, and Katie Moon at Eugene for Prefontaine Classic
