J.D. Martinez of the Mets named NL Player of the Week

During a recent six-game homestand, the experienced designated hitter played a crucial role in powering the Mets to victory in five consecutive games. J.D. Martinez, who has been playing some of his best baseball since joining the Mets this offseason, was recognized as the Player of the Week for the National League. One of the standout moments of his performance was his first career walk-off home run against the Miami Marlins last Thursday.

Facing a 1-0 deficit with a runner on base, Martinez came through in the clutch by hitting a two-run shot off Miami’s tough closer Tanner Scott. This game-winning home run showcased his ability to deliver in pressure situations. In a separate game against the San Diego Padres, Martinez hit two home runs and reached base in 10 straight plate appearances.

Pete Alonso praised Martinez’s performance, highlighting not just his hitting prowess but also his discipline in taking tough pitches. Martinez impressed with a batting average of .450, three doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, six walks, and a hit by pitch over the course of the homestand. His slugging percentage and OPS stood at an impressive 1.050 and 1.643, respectively.

Manager Carlos Mendoza recognized Martinez’s exceptional ability to carry a team with his hitting. Mendoza described Martinez’s hot streak as something that special hitters are capable of, indicating that Martinez has the potential to make a significant impact on the team’s success.
