ITOCHU and Amogy: A Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Maritime Energy Solutions through Ammonia-to-Power Conversion

Amogy and Itochu collaborate on ammonia-fueled ship technology

ITOCHU Corporation, a global trading and import/export company based in Japan, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Amogy, a company that specializes in mature, scalable, and efficient ammonia-to-power solutions. This strategic partnership aims to explore the potential application of Amogy’s technology on ITOCHU’s maritime vessels.

Amogy has developed a modular system that can convert liquid ammonia into electrical power. This innovative technology involves breaking down liquid ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen, with the hydrogen being used in a fuel cell to generate electricity on board a vessel. Together, Amogy and ITOCHU will be investigating opportunities to implement Amogy’s system on vessels owned, operated, or chartered by ITOCHU.

The partnership will involve close collaboration to identify suitable vessels, provide information on retrofitting existing vessels or designing new ones, as well as contributing technical expertise and project scoping. This collaboration may expand into other projects within the ammonia and hydrogen value chain, including ammonia bunkering projects, advisory services, equipment utilization, and collaborations in ammonia supply.

Seonghoon Woo, CEO of Amogy, expressed excitement about the partnership with ITOCHU Corporation, indicating that it marks a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions for the maritime industry. The goal is to drive innovation and contribute to a greener future. Takeo Akamatsu, General Manager of the Green Innovation Business Unit at ITOCHU also shared positive expectations for the collaboration emphasizing the potential for Amogy’s solution to be an option for the development of their integrated project for using ammonia as a marine fuel.
