Italy Restores Funding for UNRWA and Plays a Bridging Role to End Gaza Conflict

UNRWA funding from Italy set to resume

During a meeting with PNA Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa at the Farnesina, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that Italy has resumed funding for UNRWA. Tajani expressed Italy’s desire to play a bridging role and work intensely to bring an end to the military conflict in Gaza. This visit marks the first by a Palestinian Prime Minister to Europe since its establishment.

Tajani informed Mustafa that the Government has allocated 35 million euros for the Palestinian population, with 5 million going to UNRWA and 30 million dedicated to the “Food for Gaza” initiative. The Italian Government’s commitment to humanitarian aid in Gaza was further highlighted, with ongoing collaboration with organizations such as FAO, WFP, and FICROSS for assistance programs.

In addition to previous funding, Tajani announced a new aid package of 30 million euros to support initiatives for the Palestinian refugees and food security in Gaza. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s support for sustainable ceasefire efforts and humanitarian assistance during her meeting with Mustafa.

Overall, Italy’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian population through various initiatives and aid packages underscores its dedication to promoting peace and stability in the region. Tajani emphasized the importance of working towards a ceasefire in Gaza and stressed that Italy’s full support is crucial for achieving this goal.
