Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Takes on EU Leaders over Negotiation Methods: Call for Reform within the European Union

Meloni’s Call for Italy to Play a Stronger Role in the EU

In a bold move, Giorgia Meloni attacked the negotiation methods used by European leaders in the Italian Parliament. Specifically, she criticized the “fireplace” logic and the “anti-democratic method” employed in the negotiations for top positions using the “conventio ad excludendum” approach. At an upcoming crucial European council meeting to decide the future commission’s structure, Prime Minister must ask for a mandate from the Chambers to secure an important role, possibly a vice presidency for Italy.

In her communication to the Parliament, Meloni highlighted fighting illegal immigration as a priority also mentioned by Ursula von der Leyen in her application for a third mandate. She criticized the exclusion of Conservative groups in the negotiations for the new EU executive and emphasized her group’s rise as a significant political force in Europe. Meloni expressed her reluctance to ally with the left and highlighted the shortcomings of the outgoing commission’s ideological rules.

Meloni aims to secure the best possible position for Italy in the negotiations for the new commission. She stressed her personal relationship with von der Leyen and hinted at the possibility of a vice-presidency with a crucial delegation to Italy in exchange for supporting the new commission. Meloni warned against joining a fragile majority in European Parliament and highlighted dissatisfaction among European citizens with current state affairs within EU.

The Prime Minister also addressed Satnam Sigh’s tragic death and emphasized combating gangmastering in Italy. She criticized exclusionary tactics used by EU leaders against Conservatives and pledged to continue fighting for democracy both in Italy and Europe.

Meloni called for reevaluation of Europe’s priorities and approach, emphasizing need for less centralization and more decision-making power for national states. She highlighted growing discontent among European citizens with EU institutions and stressed urgent need for change in EU policies. Meloni’s speech was powerful call to action reform within EU
