Italian Man Sentenced to Eight Months in Prison for International Drug Trafficking: Mother Calls for Help and Association Advocates for Liaison Magistrate

Filippo Mosca, originally from Caltanissetta, was sentenced to over eight months of imprisonment for charges of international drug trafficking. However, the appeal confirming his sentence was postponed from April 19th to today. His friend Luca Cammalleri also had his sentence confirmed. Despite maintaining his innocence throughout the process, Mosca’s request for house arrest was rejected in March.

Ornella Matraxia, Filippo’s mother, has called for a “strong intervention” from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stating that they feel alone in this battle despite the support from many people. Katia Anedda, president of the ‘Prisoners of Silence’ association, expressed disappointment in the outcome and stated that they will continue to support the families and try to organize a trip to Romania to meet the detainees.

Francesca Carnicelli, the lawyer for the association, called the sentence a “judicial error” and expressed hope for a reduction in the sentence or a retrial. The association is advocating for a liaison magistrate for Italians detained abroad to ensure they are aware of their rights and receive proper support. They are scheduled to be heard by the Human Rights Commission Senate on May 23rd to bring attention to this case.
