Italian Gangmastering: A Widespread Problem Long Overdue for Addressing

M5s raises concerns about 200 million from the Pnrr allocated to addressing issues in camp ‘ghettos’

The government’s recent realization that gang-mastering is a widespread issue in the Italian countryside is long overdue. It has been a known problem for years, but the current executive and ministers Lollobrigida, Calderone, and Piantedosi have shown little interest in addressing it since taking office.

The tragic death of Satnam Singh at the hands of an unscrupulous entrepreneur who has been under investigation for gangmaster crimes for 5 years has brought attention to the severity of the situation. It is disheartening to learn that 200 million euros allocated for overcoming immigrant ghettos as part of the Pnrr have gone unused. Moreover, the appointment of the extraordinary commissioner, Prefect Maurizio Falco, came 20 days late, violating the terms of decree 19/2024.

These delays in taking action on important matters are unacceptable. Alessandro Caramiello, the M5S group leader in the Agriculture Committee of the Chamber, urged the government to provide accountability and a plan for utilizing the allocated funds. It is time for action rather than just empty words from the government.
