On the morning of March 28 and March 29, two Russian IL 20 model planes were intercepted by Italian fighter jets while flying over international airspace on the border with the area under NATO control. According to defense sources, the warning system that triggered the interception was due to a lack of contact between the aircraft and air traffic management control towers. The Italian fighters stationed at the Malbork base in Poland quickly identified and intercepted the Russian spy aircraft twice in 24 hours.
The NATO Air Operations Command and Control Center based in Uedem, Germany, raised the alarm for the intercept. Italian Air Force aircraft from TFA, operating within the NATO Enhanced Air Policing mission, conducted the identification before returning to their base. The Italian Air Task Force “4th Wing” at Malbork employs Eurofighter aircraft from four air defense wings of the Italian Air Force to respond to radar-detected traces quickly and around the clock.
The Italian contingent is part of a NATO mission and consists of Air Force personnel deployed at Krolewo airport in Malbork alongside Polish Air Force personnel. This is their second time being involved in enhanced Air Policing operations in Poland. Their mission is to protect North-Eastern flank of Atlantic Alliance.
