Italian Employment Rises by 292 Thousand in One Year: A Closer Look at the Data and Trends

300,000 Workers Celebrate on May 1st, 2021

In February 2024, the number of employed people in Italy increased by 292 thousand compared to April 2023, according to the last provisional data provided by Istat. This means that almost 300 thousand more workers are celebrating May 1st this year than last year.

According to official data from 2023, there were 23.6 million employed people in Italy, 471 thousand more than the pre-Covid period. The South of Italy saw the highest percentage increase in employment at 3.5 percent. Forecasts suggest that the overall number of employed people is expected to grow further, reaching 24 million workers by 2025.

CGIA Research Office reported that the number of employed people in Italy in April 2023 was 23,481,000 units, while in February 2024, it reached 23,773,000. The artisans of Mestre highlighted that almost all companies in Italy have fewer than twenty employees (98%).

Around 60 percent of Italian workers find employment in small businesses, excluding the public sector. This shows that work is mainly created by small entrepreneurs in the country. To improve the employment trend, it is essential to support these small businesses by reducing taxes and bureaucracy and providing necessary liquidity for them to invest in increasing competitiveness.
