Italian Democrats Stand Firm in Fight Against Right, Focusing on Key Issues in Parliament and Beyond

Schlein’s Alliance Guidelines: No Vetoes and Focus on the Right

The Italian Democratic Party is standing firm against the European and Italian right, while continuing to focus on critical issues. At a meeting held at the national headquarters in Largo del Nazareno, Secretary Elly Schlein welcomed newly elected European parliamentarians, setting the tone for the party’s direction in Italy and Europe. Attendees such as Dario Nardella, Matteo Ricci, and Antonio Decaro described the meeting as positive and enthusiastic. They recognized that the party’s growth was due to a combination of Schlein’s activism and their presence in local communities.

Schlein emphasized that key issues from the electoral campaign will remain central to the party’s agenda both inside and outside Parliament. These include healthcare reform, minimum wage, human rights, particularly abortion and LGBTQ rights which were excluded from the G7 draft. The Democrats are also fighting against attacks on Parliament and defending the Constitution. A demonstration is planned on June 18 in Rome as part of an opposition push for a coalition that presents a solid alternative to the center-right government.

Antonio Decaro highlighted the need for progressive forces to unite, bridging gaps between parties, particularly in local elections like those in Bari. Schlein, drawing on her experience in Brussels, will lead European negotiations for high positions and group leaders, leveraging her knowledge of community institutions. The focus remains on building a strong alternative to the right without imposing any vetoes. The party sees itself as pivotal in this construction, emphasizing the need for unity and collaboration among progressive forces.
