The Israeli Minister of Defense, Benny Gantz, has called for early parliamentary elections in September. Gantz made the announcement in a televised speech from his office at the Knesset, where he is a member. He emphasized the need for a consensus date to be set for the legislative elections to occur.
To organize early elections, 61 Members of Parliament or a majority of Knesset representatives is required as Netanyahu’s Likud Party holds the largest number of seats without a majority. Gantz also informed Netanyahu and wished him a speedy recovery while continuing dialogue on the issue.
Netanyahu, who was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday after minor surgery, rejected Gantz’s proposal immediately. The Likud Party stated that organizing elections during wartime would lead to paralysis and could impact battles against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
In recent weeks, thousands have participated in anti-Netanyahu demonstrations, especially in cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Demonstrators and relatives of families affected by the kidnapping on October 7 have called for Netanyahu’s resignation, adding to the growing pressure on the Prime Minister.
