Israel sees an increase in ALS diagnoses and pioneers innovative AI technology to support patients

Using AI to Assist ALS Patients Unable to Speak

Israel has seen an increase in ALS diagnoses with about 138 new cases reported in 2023, bringing the total number of patients to approximately 600. Despite being a progressive disease with no cure, ALS patients typically live only a few months to several years after diagnosis. However, this hasn’t stopped IsraAlS from providing support and aid to those affected by the disease.

Recently, IsraAlS held their 19th annual fundraising evening that featured three prominent Israeli researchers in the field of ALS. The event also included a performance by Danny Sanderson and a moving speech from Debbie Edmoni Zinner, an ALS patient and advocate.

What made Debbie’s speech unique was the use of AI technology to create an avatar that spoke on her behalf. This cutting-edge technology mimicked Debbie’s movements and facial expressions, allowing her to share her story with the audience in a truly innovative way. This technology, a first of its kind in Israel, provided Debbie with a voice even as ALS robbed her of her ability to speak.

IsraAlS is dedicated to supporting not just patients but also their families, offering them emotional support and practical advice. They believe that everyone affected by ALS deserves compassion and understanding, regardless of their circumstances. With the help of organizations like IsraAlS, people living with ALS can find hope and support in their daily lives.
