Israel Faces Possible EU Sanctions for Ignoring ICJ Ruling on Rafah Military Operation

Minister says EU may consider sanctions against Israel for not following world court’s decision

Israel is facing the possibility of sanctions from the European Union for not complying with a ruling by the International Court of Justice to stop its military operation in Rafah, local media reported. During a meeting of the European Political Community, EU foreign ministers discussed the possibility of imposing sanctions against Israel if it continued to ignore the court’s order. Some ministers also suggested imposing sanctions on Israeli officials who supported violent settlers in the West Bank. However, there is not a consensus at the EU Council level due to differing perspectives.

The recent attack in Rafah resulted in the deaths of 45 people and injuries to nearly 250 others. Israel targeted a camp for displaced people and houses in southern Gaza City, near the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) logistics base in Tal al-Sultan. Missiles and 2,000-pound bombs were used in the attack. The ICJ had ordered Israel to stop its military offensive in Rafah, open the Rafah crossing, and allow access to international fact-finding missions. Since October last year, when Hamas carried out a cross-border attack, Israel has killed thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, leaving many homeless and facing famine.
