Island Paradise at Risk: How Overrun Tourism is Threatening the Canaries’ Natural Beauty and Local Communities

Why a historic protest took place in the Canary Islands: “I am proud to be here”

The Canary Islands are becoming increasingly popular tourist destinations, but for some residents like Tinyumar Vera, a psychology student from San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it’s time for a change. Vera believes that the islands are being overrun with tourists and that their comfort is being prioritized over that of the residents. She emphasizes the importance of controlling tourism to preserve the natural beauty of the islands.

Moisés Martín, an electrician from the Geneto neighborhood, agrees with Vera and supports the implementation of an eco-tax for tourists. Martín believes that tourists should contribute financially to the impact they have on Canarian society, especially in terms of resources like water. He argues that the money generated from an eco-tax could benefit the community and create a better society for everyone.

Cristian Hernández, a Business Management student who attended the demonstration out of pride and a desire to fight for a better future for the Canary Islands, shares his concerns about environmental destruction caused by tourism. He wants to ensure that future generations can enjoy the islands as much as he does.

Kenneth Estévez, an unemployed administrative officer who attended the demonstration with his child, is concerned about environmental drift in the islands. He emphasizes the need to preserve natural beauty and improve infrastructure to accommodate both residents and tourists alike.

Mercedes Vega, a housekeeper in a hotel who represents a group of workers protesting against precarious conditions in the tourism sector, highlights physical and psychological tolls faced by housekeepers in their demanding workloads. She advocates for better working conditions for all workers in this sector.
