Iran has started the registration process for presidential candidates

The tragic death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash on May 19 has led to the registration of presidential candidates in Iran. As of now, three individuals have submitted their applications to run for office.

Among the candidates, Said Jalili, a member of the Council of Expediency and former Secretary of the Iranian Security Council, is the most notable figure. Additionally, parliamentarian Mohammed Reza Sabaghyan Bafgi and Mustafa Kuvakbian, the secretary general of the Democratic Party (reformers), have also submitted their candidacies.

Former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who was speculated to be a potential candidate representing the reformers, has decided not to participate in the elections. The registration of candidates will take place from May 30 to June 3, with the verification of candidates’ qualifications occurring from June 4 to 10. The final list of candidates will be officially announced on June 11th.
